utkt beta3 |
background
The utkt project was first proposed in 1997 by developers working at PrintBox Technologies. PrintBox was the originator of automated print production for numbered tickets, a technology which folded the 11 steps necessary to create tickets into a single process. Using this technology, what once took weeks was compressed into hours (Our history with those products is documented at printbox.com and at various other internet sources).
With the advent of the internet, it was evident that these techniques were going to be adopted so that on-line users could prepare their own work, and that the vendor would assume a passive role in this process.
The internet begat an entire movement to make software essentially free, and development a collaborative undertaking of equals contributing to an astonishing explosion of software which was to be offered without restrictions or costs.
The utkt project began in earnest during 2003 to integrate these software components into a user-selectable matrix where the user could select as many components as necessary to do their job.
Our first focus has been on tasks involving reservations, scheduling and booking. Current proof of concept is a Web Application code-named TOL, which allows a theater to reserve seats; issue seasons tickets; maintain database of members and prospects; define pricing and class specifications; generate a schedule of accounts within a full-featured accounting framework, create tickets for any number of events, and print them on any type of available printer. TOL demonstrates that the user can easily modify the look of the web pages which are generated, changing color, graphics and fonts as desired.
We have had the help of dozens of theater groups around the country, all of whom have contributed greatly to where we are today -- at the end of a second round of beta tests. Our third tests expand our support to several hundred groups, irrespective of their size or financial condition (that does not imply any judgments on our part. Our sole interest is making software work, and work well). Many of our volunteer groups tell us that they have benefited already by helping to build a customizable software framework which itself requires no further programming beyond initial definition of needs.
If you would like to join our effort to build free software which simply cannot be duplicated in the commercial arena, give us a call or fill out the initial form provided below. It is brief.
